What to Do
One of the best ways to protect yourself from identity thieft is to monitor your credit history. You can get one free credit report every year from each of the three national credit bureaus:

- DETECT suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements
- DEFEND against ID theft as soon as you suspect a problem
If You’re A Victim
Contact your local police department; immediately alert the three major credit bureaus and place a 90-day fraud alert on your credit file. Also, request a free copy of your credit report:
